The Paris Climate Accord, adopted by nearly 200 nations in 2015, aims to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius by requiring signatories to submit national commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Although hailed as a historic milestone, some critics argue the accord’s voluntary pledges and lack of enforcement make it insufficient to avert dangerous climate change.

Supporters counter that the agreement represents an essential first step toward coordinated global action, establishing a framework for transparency, regular reporting and progressively stronger commitments. By bringing countries together under a common goal and requiring updates every five years, it lays the groundwork for more ambitious emissions reductions and clean energy investments.

Regardless of whether one views the Paris Accord as too little or just the beginning, the United States and states like Pennsylvania must continue to lead by advancing renewable energy, cutting carbon pollution, and advocating for stronger national and international climate policies. Only by building on this agreement can we ensure a safer, healthier future for our communities.
