Penn State’s Ag Progress Days opened with partners from agriculture, government and NGOs showcasing advances in farming and underscoring the growing importance of water quality and conservation. As PennFuture’s campaign manager for watershed advocacy, the author spent the week learning from farmers and educating attendees about how sustainable practices like riparian buffers, no‑till farming, streambank fencing, and tree plantings help protect the Commonwealth’s 85,000 miles of rivers and streams.

A recurring theme of the event is that we are all part of the watershed, and farmers’ land ethic must align with stewardship of streams, creeks and rivers. Sessions on using drones in agriculture and discussions with state officials reinforced the need for collaborative efforts to link land preservation to water‑quality goals. By connecting agricultural innovation with environmental stewardship, the event highlighted the shared responsibility to maintain clean water for all.
