The U.S. Federal Government Will No Longer Limit Climate Pollution From Power Plants

There is no longer a federal limit on carbon pollution from U.S. power plants. The Trump Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it will no longer restrict carbon pollution from coal and gas burning power plants. This rollback of emissions controls only benefits the corporate fossil fuel industry at the expense of our planet and our health.

This is the latest attack on Americans’ clean air protections by the EPA. In July 2025, the agency announced plans to “reconsider” the Endangerment Finding, a 2009 EPA determination that greenhouse gas emissions—like carbon and methane—are reasonably anticipated to endanger public health or welfare.

“The Trump Administration has abdicated its duty to protect Americans in pursuit of promoting corporate greed by dismantling climate pollution protections. For those of us who understand the severity of what is being done to us, this will unleash poisons and environmental horrors,” said Patrick McDonnell, president and CEO of PennFuture.

Pennsylvania has more at stake than almost any other state. As one of the nation's largest energy producers, Pennsylvania relies heavily on polluting sources. While the Trump EPA refuses to acknowledge the science behind climate pollution, Pennsylvanians will continue to endure catastrophic flooding, dangerous heat, dirtier air, and higher energy costs.

“The Trump Administration is once again doing the bidding of its big polluter campaign donors and putting everyday Americans at risk. We are coming off of the hottest summer on record, our energy prices are skyrocketing, and the cost of living is out of control. Giving polluters and dirty, expensive fossil fuels a handout is a catastrophic mistake," said Molly Parzen, Executive Director of Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania.

Our government is telling us that what we see in our waterways, on our thermostats, on our electric bills and during our children's sick days is not happening and does not matter. They are wrong. Pennsylvania will keep fighting for clean air, pure water, and healthy communities, with or without Washington.
