Pennsylvania Needs PRESS Now More Than Ever

Pennsylvania’s fracked gas industry should be worried. House Bill 2277, the Pennsylvania Reliable Energy Sustainability Standard (PRESS), would overhaul the 2004 Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard and boost Pennsylvania’s reliance on clean energy. PRESS sets a goal of 35 % Tier I renewable energy by 2035, which will require big expansions of solar, wind and other clean sources. This shift builds on the state’s “Finding Pennsylvania’s Solar Future” project and will create jobs while reducing pollution and price volatility. The current AEPS has largely been met and many states now require far higher renewable shares; PRESS modernizes the law and removes outdated loopholes, phasing out credits for waste coal and by‑product methane. With federal investments like the Inflation Reduction Act and record demand for solar jobs, now is the time to pivot from gas to renewables. PennFuture urges lawmakers to support PRESS and asks residents to contact their representatives and join the growing coalition for a clean‑energy future.
