PennFuture Issues Statement on Need for Climate Action as EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler Addresses Shale Insight 2018 Conference

(Oct. 23, 2018) Pittsburgh, PA – Shale Insight™ 2018, a major shale industry conference organized in part by the Marcellus Shale Coalition, is taking place Oct. 23–25 at Pittsburgh’s David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Andrew Wheeler, Acting Administrator of the U.S. Environment Protection Agency, is delivering the keynote address. Jacquelyn Bonomo, president and CEO of PennFuture, a statewide organization leading the transition to a clean energy economy in Pennsylvania, issued the following statement:

“PennFuture remains deeply troubled by the direction and policies of the U.S. EPA under President Trump, as carried out by Acting EPA Administrator and former coal industry lobbyist, Wheeler, and previously by disgraced but equally as dangerous former Administrator Scott Pruitt. As the EPA continues to cater to the wishes of the fossil fuel industry, it is showing virtually no regard for the long-term health and quality of life of the American people and the health of the environment it is charged to protect.

In recent years, the U.S. has made modest progress in the battle to halt climate change. The EPA announced last week that U.S. greenhouse gas emissions fell 2.7% during 2017. The question now on the minds of scientists and environmentalist is, how will our country continue this progress, let alone achieve the level of progress needed to stave off the catastrophic effects of climate change, if the regressive environmental policies recently proposed by the Trump administration and endorsed by Mr. Wheeler are implemented? Based on the description of his speech on the Shale Insight website, Mr. Wheeler is unlikely to address this question when he speaks at the conference. Instead, he’ll focus on addressing ongoing bellyaching from defiant industries uninterested in playing by the rules.

Climate change is real and the time available to reverse it is growing short. Regulation under Wheeler and Trump’s EPA will worsen asthma, especially among children, and cause premature deaths.  And instead of taking measures to provide certainty to communities dealing with havoc caused by increasingly extreme weather, Trump’s EPA will subject all of us to the uncertainty and unpredictability of the growing climate crisis.”

PennFuture is leading the transition to a clean energy economy in Pennsylvania, fighting big polluters with legal muscle, enforcing environmental laws, and supporting legislative policy that protects public health. PennFuture is engaging and educating citizens about the realities of climate change, and giving them the tools needed to influence lawmakers on the issues.
