Conservation Voters of PA and PennFuture applaud the decision of the Shapiro Administration to automatically register eligible voters when they get a driver’s license or ID card at PennDOT. Automatic voter registration (AVR) will improve the access of countless Pennsylvanians to the ballot box, particularly those in our Commonwealth’s communities of color and among people with disabilities and impairments, who have been historically disenfranchised.
Our form of government thrives with an engaged and active citizenship. This obligates us to ensure that all Pennsylvanians have access to the right to vote, a right secured by the generations who came before us and sacrificed for their families, communities, and our nation throughout its history. Furthermore, we know citizens of our Commonwealth overwhelmingly support the right enshrined in our state constitution “to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment.”
We commend Governor Shapiro and his administration for implementing AVR, especially at a time when democracy is under attack from many on the political fringes. Considering the broad public support for environmentally minded public policy, increased participation in our elections will make it easier to conserve and maintain our natural resources for future generations.
